Shock Wave Therapy

How Does Shock Wave Therapy Work?

Shockwave therapy uses high energy acoustic waves that are transmitted into the body at a depth of up to 4.7”. Once these acoustic waves reach the injured tissue, they have been shown to accelerate the healing process in the body by stimulating the metabolism and enhancing blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue, as well as interrupt the pain pathways of the inflamed nerves in the affected area. These pulses occur for short periods of time, creating micro-cavitation bubbles that expand and burst. The force created by these bubbles penetrates tissue and stimulates cells in the body that are responsible for bone and connective tissue healing. This leads to the restoration of healthy functioning cells and brings new blood flow to the area. This is particularly important in areas of decreased blood flow, such as meniscus and disc injuries. In many instances, shockwave therapy is most effective in cases where the human body has not been able to heal itself on its own. Shock Wave Therapy can be beneficial in treating conditions such as:

  • Foot and heel pain

  • Acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain

  • Release of trigger points

  • Dissolving of calcified fibroblasts

  • Stimulation of collagen

  • Reversal of chronic inflammation

  • Muscle strain healing

  • Muscle regeneration support

  • Muscle spasms

  • Jumper’s knee

  • Tennis elbow

  • Shoulder tendonitis

  • Achilles tendon pain

  • ED/PE

  • Wound Healing

  • Neuropathy

  • Disc Bulges in the neck and low back

How Long is a Shock Wave Therapy Session?

Generally, Shock Wave Therapy consists of 3 to 7 sessions administered at weekly intervals. Treatment sessions themselves take approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on the area that is being treated. In addition, for accelerated healing, Shock Wave Therapy can be used in conjunction with other therapies used in the office, particularly Cold Laser Therapy, as well as with your regular chiropractic adjustments.
